NBA Awards Odds and Futures

NBA awards odds are futures on season honours such as MVP, Coach of the Year and Clutch Player of the Year. Media voters decide the winners after the regular season.

Which NBA Awards Can You Bet On?

Each award is a separate outright market, usually open from the preseason until voting closes. The table lists the main regular-season honours.

Who Decides the Winners?

The league's regular-season awards are decided by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. Ballots are cast after the regular season ends, before the playoffs have shaped opinion. Finalists are announced first, and winners follow during the playoffs.
Because voters are people, narrative matters as well as numbers. A team that beats preseason expectations draws attention to its coach and its best player. Voting ignores playoff results, so a late-season surge counts and a playoff collapse does not.

What Moves Coach of the Year Odds?

Coach of the Year usually goes to a coach whose team clearly outperforms its preseason win projection. A preseason total of 38 wins that ends near 50 tells a stronger story than a favourite meeting expectations. Big improvements after a coaching change or a roster rebuild also draw votes. Odds react to the standings. In the first weeks, the market is wide open and prices are long. By midseason, two or three coaches usually separate. Bettors who compare each team's record with its preseason win total can spot candidates before the price shortens.

How Is the Clutch Player Award Decided?

Clutch Player of the Year was first awarded for the 2022-23 season. It rewards performance in clutch time, which the league defines as the last five minutes of a game with the score within five points. Points, shooting efficiency and game-winning plays in those minutes shape the vote.
Clutch samples are small, so the race can swing on a few late shots. A player with several game-winners in a month can jump to the top of the board. That volatility makes early prices long and later prices jumpy. Stars on teams that play many close games get the most chances.

How Does the 65-Game Rule Affect Bets?

Since the 2023-24 season, most player awards require at least 65 games played. The rule covers MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, Most Improved Player and Clutch Player of the Year, as well as All-NBA teams. Rookie of the Year, Sixth Man of the Year and Coach of the Year are not tied to it. A player who misses too many games becomes ineligible, and a bet on him loses. Injuries late in the season can end a race overnight. Checking how many games a candidate can still miss is part of the price assessment, not an afterthought.

How Do Bettors Approach Award Futures?

Bet Early on Clear Stories
The best prices appear before the market agrees on a favourite. A clear narrative, such as a rebuilt roster or a new coach, can justify an early bet.
Watch Availability
Track games played against the 65-game rule. One long injury can make a candidate ineligible.
Mind the Margin
Outright markets carry larger margins than single games. Comparing prices between licensed books helps.
Spread the Stakes
Small stakes on two or three candidates reduce the risk of one injury ruining the position. Season-long hockey award futures follow the same logic.
